Why is the display curved? This is everything you need to know

Gaming monitors come in various shapes and sizes, and some are even equipped with curved screens, but why?

If you want to upgrade your monitor and are not sure whether to choose the curved or flat option, we have everything you need to know here.

Let’s dive in!

Why is the display curved?

Some displays are curved to match the curvature of the eye, thereby providing a more natural view when viewing the screen.

Curved displays try to replicate your natural 3D vision by surrounding your eyes and creating a sense of depth by extending to your peripheral vision.

Therefore, curved displays are generally considered more immersive than flat displays because they allow the viewer to see the entire screen at the same time.

What is the curvature level?

When looking at some of the best curved monitors for gaming, you may have noticed terms such as 1500R, 1800R, and 3000R.

These numbers refer to the severity of the curvature of any given display, for example, the smaller the number before “R”, the steeper the curve.

Therefore, the lower the R value, the more immersive the viewing experience.

R refers to the radius, in millimeters, which may be a bit confusing at first glance. If you are creating a ring with a lot of curved displays, it is essentially the radius of the circle.

So, for example, if you follow the curve of a 1800R monitor and form a circle, the radius will be 1800 mm.

This number not only refers to the radius, it is also considered the best viewing distance of the monitor, so for a 2000R monitor, you should sit at a distance of 2000 mm.

Are curved displays better?

Although we know that there is some debate about the best monitor screen size, there is also a discussion about whether a curved screen is better than a flat screen.

In terms of original specifications, there is almost no difference between flat panel displays and curved displays. Both can provide the same screen technology and refresh rate. For example, in the best 144Hz displays, both can be found.

According to a study by Harvard Medical School, there are significant differences between participants when using curved and flat displays.

For example, participants who used curved displays reported reduced vision blur and reduced stress, while using flat-panel displays, they had greater difficulty focusing and their eyes felt more tired.

However, not everyone is like this. Some participants reported that they are more uncomfortable when using curved displays, which suggests that which is better can ultimately be attributed to personal preference and that you feel better as an individual.

If you want to upgrade your settings, whether you are using an amazing HDMI 2.1 display or an excellent 240Hz display, we think the flat and curved options are definitely worth considering.
